Painting With Three Colors

The Tuesday class went to the beach to paint but very quickly things started blowing in the wind and we ended up in my studio AGAIN.  I guess we’ve become fair-weather painters.

In the photos below, the student used Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Deep, and Cobalt Blue.

Once back in shelter, the three students all found photos to paint from but I challenged them to close their eyes and pick three tubes of paint. They could add either white or buff titanium.

In the photos below, this student drew three primary colors: Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Light, and Cadmium Yellow Light.

After much groaning and whining, I think they all produced pretty impressive results. Amazing what can be done with three random colors and in the end they all agreed that it was quite fun.

And in the photos shown below, this third student used Cerulean Blue, Dioxazine Purple, and Cadmium Yellow.

Painting with three colors is a great thing to do if you’re having what I call an artist’s snit (when you just can’t paint or nothing works and you’re totally frustrated).🔹
